He received his Ph.D. in organic chemistry from the University of South Florida with Professor Jon C. Antilla where he studies chiral Brønsted acid catalysis. He conducted postdoctoral studies at the University of Texas at Austin in the laboratory of Professor Michael J. Krische, before he took on a position with Prof. MacMillan in Princeton University.

- After spending several years on the beaches in Florida, Tao becomes an aquatic activity enthusiast. He loves scuba diving and watching all kinds of marine life passing by.
- Tao’s favorite TV show is The West Wing. He remembers everything that happens in every episode.
