Dr. Tao Wang

B.Sc., Peking University, 2011

Ph.D., University of Minnesota, 2016

Tao was born and raised in Wuhu, a small city sitting on the southeast bank of the Yangtze River. After high school, he went to Peking University, where he became fascinated by the rich mechanistic details in organic chemistry. He was trained to probe these interesting questions through DFT calculations in the lab of Zhi-Xiang Yu. In 2010, he met Tom Hoye during his lecture in Beijing and was immediately attracted to Tom’s research program. He moved to the Twin Cities and joined the Hoye lab one year later. His doctoral research focused on the biosynthesis of paracaseolide A and the chemistries of benzynes assembled by the hexadehydro-Diels–Alder (HDDA) reaction. Tao joined the MacMillan lab as a postdoc researcher in 2017 to explore more about photoredox catalysis.
