Graduate Student, 1st year
B.S. in Chemistry, California State University, Chico (Chico, CA), 2018
Michael Smith was born and raised in Santa Clarita, California. He earned his undergraduate degree from California State University, Chico, where he did chemical education research with Erik Wasinger. This work involved developing flipped classrooms and active learning modules for general chemistry courses in order to reduce 44% failure rates and reduce the “at risk” student achievement gaps for underrepresented minorities, first-generation college students, low income college students, and women in STEM. Michael completed an REU with the Bocarsly group in the summer of 2017 and was inspired to come back for his graduate studies. In his spare time, Michael enjoys getting texts back, looking at his growing pile of laundry, and constantly changing his Instagram handle.
